Optimizing Pages with Keyword Search Phrases

In a great discussion about content relevance, this SEOMOZ article outlines what the author believes are the optimal placements of the primary keyword phrase:

  • In the title tag once, and possibly twice (or as a variation) if it makes sense and sounds good (subjective, but necessary)
  • Once in the H1 header tag of the page
  • At least 3X in the body copy on the page (sometimes a few more times if there's a lot of text content)
  • At least once in bold
  • At least once in the alt tag of an image
  • Once in the URL
  • At least once (sometimes 2X when it makes sense) in the meta description tag
  • Generally not in link anchor text on the page itself (this is a bit more complex - see this post for details) source

It it hotly debated if the H1 or the H2 tag is more relevant; many pundits on SEOMOZ will claim the H2 tag is more important, at least with Google.

The Co-operative Bank’s Focus on Ethics

the-ethical-bank.png

Here is an interesting twist -- a Bank whose marketing value proposition is "ethics." The bank is called The Co-operative Bank. They have features including a card that offers 0% on purchases and balance transfers for six months. Another option is a card that earns money for your chosen organization as you make charges to your card.

All in all they have a variety of credit cards for just about any need.Their ethics are their key differentiator though. Looking at some of their statements, they make comments such as:

We believe our commitment to championing ethical values of our customers and supporting communities is unique. From our customer-led Ethical Policy to our heritage in the Co-operative movement, there’s no other organisation quite like us.

Back in 1992, we were the first bank in the world to introduce a customer-led Ethical Policy. 15 years on and we're still the only UK high street bank with a customer-led Ethical Policy. Take a look at some of our achievements over the past 15 years, and find out why, when it comes to making a positive difference, we’re still leading the way.

Another example of one of their ethical actions:

We believe in taking action against climate change. Since 1998 we have not invested in any business involved in the extraction or production of fossil fuels. This is just one aspect of our Ethical Policy.

The latest iteration of Microsoft's Live Search, which was first "leaked" last week, is now live and in the wild. Web Usability at Convertup.com

convertup.pngCame across this very nicely done site: Convertup.com. The founder of this site (make sure to subscribe to his ConvertUp web usability blog -- the articles are great) has numerous tips about web usability testing. ConvertUp publishes articles and offers services to help people increase their site’s conversion rate by offering a usability testing service. The premise of this site is that, in general, by making your site more user-friendly you will be able to convert your existing site traffic into more sales. (Get it? "Convert Up").

I liked what the author said about this himself:

I consider myself an “Internet Marketing Coach”. I am passionate about helping people create successful online businesses. Whether it be usability (my specialty), search engine rankings, or general website marketing strategy, internet marketing is on my mind all day, every day. When I find precious few hours to sleep, I dream about internet marketing. I realize the internet is a big place, but I have this silly notion that I can make it better and more user-centric by sharing my usability knowledge through my service and my blog. Source

Well, I don't always dream about internet marketing in my sleep, but I like to read articles by someone who does!
